If you're ever unfortunate enough to lose mental capacity, you'll be unable to manage your own affairs. For example, you would no longer be able to buy or sell property, make final decisions about your own medical treatment or even access your bank account.

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are legal documents that allow you (the "Donor") to appoint people you trust (your "Attorneys") to act on your behalf when you're no longer able to do so. They are an important part of in-life Estate Planning. In fact, consumer champion Martin Lewis considered them "more important than Wills".

You can only register LPAs whilst you still have the mental capacity required to grant this power, and it avoids lengthy and costly court applications later.
